The True Price of “Free” Resume Builders (Verified, August 2026)

“Free resume builder” is the most searched promise in this niche and the least kept. Most of the tools ranking for it let you build for free, then introduce the price at the download button, when your resume is already hostage. So we did the boring thing: in August 2026 we opened each builder’s own pricing page and wrote down what it says. Every number below comes from a page we fetched ourselves, as of August 2026, and where a site shows different prices in different regions we say so. Prices change — treat this as a dated snapshot, not scripture.

One disclosure: we make a resume builder ourselves, and it’s in the table. We’ve applied the same standard to it as to everyone else, because a pricing page that fibs about itself is not a pricing page.

The numbers, side by side

All figures from each builder’s own pricing page, fetched August 5, 2026. Resume.io, Novoresume, and Kickresume showed us prices in euros — their pages localize by region, so you may see dollars; the structure is the same. Enhancv’s dollar figures come from the structured data embedded in its pricing page. MyPerfectResume’s page shows the same plan structure as LiveCareer’s (same parent company) but renders its prices with JavaScript we couldn’t read, so we quote LiveCareer’s verified numbers instead. The “per year” column is our arithmetic: “every 4 weeks” means 13 billings a year, not 12.

The paywall-at-download group

Zety. zety.com/pricing lists a free Basic package whose downloads are “TXT format only” — the designed PDF stays behind the counter. Pro is a $1.95 14-day trial that “auto-renews at $25.95 billed every 4 weeks,” and an annual package runs $5.95/month charged as $71.40 up front, auto-renewing each year.

ResumeGenius. Same shape, different numbers, straight from resumegenius.com/pricing: free access is “Resume Builder (TXT only)”; the $2.95 14-day trial “auto renews after 14 days at $23.95 billed every four weeks”; the annual plan is $7.95/month as a one-time payment of $95.40 for 12 months, auto-renewing annually.

Resume.io. The free plan is one resume and cover letter with “downloads only in TXT format.” A €2.95 7-day trial auto-renews at €24.95 billed every 4 weeks, and a quarterly plan runs €49.95 every 3 months. Currency caveat: we were served euros — the site localizes pricing, so US visitors typically see dollar equivalents.

Enhancv. No trial charge here; instead the “free plan” is a 7-day plan, literally — “valid for 7 days,” with Enhancv branding on the document and a maximum of 12 section items. Pro is listed at $39 monthly, $69 quarterly, or $99 semi-annually (the advertised “starting from $16.50” is the semi-annual price divided by six). More honest than a fake trial, but “free for a week” is a trial wearing a name tag.

Novoresume. Credit where due. The free tier is real but tight: one resume, one page maximum, three fonts, no cover letter. Premium is a one-time payment — €19.99 for a month, €39.99 for a quarter, €139.99 for a year as shown to us — with “pay once, no recurring billing” on the page and an FAQ confirming “our pricing model is not subscription based.” In this industry, that sentence is practically a charity donation.

Kickresume. Genuinely free at the bottom: four free templates, and their own FAQ confirms you can download for free if you stick to the free customization options. Premium unlocks the other 40+ templates and the AI tools at €24/month, €18/month quarterly, or €8/month yearly (first-period discounts apply). Students with ISIC, ITIC, or UNiDAYS get Premium free — also credit where due.

MyPerfectResume / LiveCareer. Same Bold family as Zety, and it shows. LiveCareer’s pricing page quotes a $2.95 14-day trial auto-renewing at $23.95 “billed every four weeks,” or $71.40 up front annually — nearly Zety’s numbers to the cent. MyPerfectResume’s pricing page displays the identical structure (free plan with TXT-only downloads, Premium with “14-Day Access” and “1-Year Access”) but renders its prices via JavaScript we couldn’t read, so we report the structure and decline to invent the figures.

How the trial trap works

The mechanic is identical across the paywall group, so here it is once. You build a resume for free — that part is real. At the download button you’re offered full access for a small sum: $1.95, $2.95, €2.95. That fee buys a short trial, and the trial converts automatically into a subscription billed every 4 weeks. Four-week billing is the quiet star of the show: it sounds monthly but runs 13 cycles a year, not 12. The arithmetic, labeled as such: 13 × $25.95 ≈ $337, 13 × $23.95 ≈ $311. A missed cancel turns the two-dollar decision into a three-hundred-dollar year, one unremarkable bank-statement line at a time.

To be scrupulously fair: these terms are disclosed. Every quote above comes from a public pricing page, and the auto-renewal language is printed right next to the price. The problem is timing and placement — you meet the $1.95 at the download screen, resume in hand, and the $25.95-every-4-weeks part is the sentence you skim. The actually free options

The contrast is what makes the first table readable, and it’s a short, honest list. We compared these in more depth in our free-builder roundup; here’s the pricing view.

FlowCV.Your first resume is free forever — unlimited PDF downloads, no watermark, no credit card, no auto-upgrade, their site says verbatim. The trade-offs: you need an account, your data lives on their servers (GDPR-compliant, deletable), and saving multiple resume versions or using the AI writer is paid. That’s how they fund the free tier, and they say so openly.

Resume.com. Indeed’s builder, and the download is honestly free — their own structured data lists the price as $0 with “unlimited access to create, save and download resumes.” The price is the funnel: you sign in with an Indeed account and your resume becomes part of the world’s largest job board. That may be exactly what you want; go in knowing it’s the deal.

Reactive Resume. Free and open source under the MIT license (we checked the GitHub repo — 40,000+ stars), with no paid tier at all. The hosted app has historically wanted an account; the truly allergic-to-accounts option is self-hosting it with Docker, which is also the maximum-privacy option.

Another CV Maker (us). Everything free: all 12 templates, real PDF export with selectable text, no watermark, and no account — there is no sign-up form, and your data sits in your browser’s localStorage where we can’t see it, leak it, or bill it. The honest weaknesses: 12 templates is fewer than FlowCV’s 50+, there’s no AI writing help, and drafts don’t sync across devices on their own. We are the cheapest resume builder on this list in every currency, and we know exactly how much that claim is worth.

Why do resume builders charge every 4 weeks instead of monthly?
We can only show the math, not read minds: 4-week cycles produce 13 charges a year where monthly billing produces 12 — about 8% more revenue from a price that still looks “monthly-ish” on a checkout screen. The cadence is disclosed on the pricing pages; it just does its best work on your bank statement.

How do I avoid the subscription trap?
Read the pricing page before you build, not the checkout screen after. Search it for “auto-renew” and “every 4 weeks.” If you do take a trial, cancel immediately after downloading — most services keep access until the trial ends — or set a calendar reminder for day 12 of 14. Or skip the genre entirely and use one of the builders from the actually-free rows above, where there is nothing to cancel because there is nothing to charge.
